Are there rattlesnakes in tahoe

The rattle snake moved out of the way of us playing in the area. Color of the rattler was black white and brown, Very pretty snake at the time. Are there rattlesnakes in Tahoe area? The answer is yes, just very far between. Also there are low venomous scorpions in the area. Use caution probing around in the Tahoe basin area.

I am planning a hike during summer along the Tahoe rim trail and was wondering what dangerous animals my dog and I might encounter. Hi Unknown, Most of us in Tahoe go hiking without ever thinking that any dangerous animals are lurking about. Having said that, there are the occasional bear and mountain lion and - truth be told - other people's dogs who can be bothersome.

And if you have a dog that is smaller than 25 or 30 pounds, keep them with you at all times so they don't become coyote lunch. It's rare, but it happens. I always carry a walking stick. Some people carry bear spray, although I think that's unnecessary.

The most troublesome bear will break into your car. But I've never heard of a Tahoe bear hurting a person. After living here for 30 years, I've learned that the biggest threats in the back country are not animals. They are sunburn, sprained ankles, and, worst of all, getting lost. Enjoy the Rim Trail! I saw a rattlesnake 6,ft. I think it was a timber rattlesnake. Had a lot of white. It's rattle was not very loud, like I would have expected.

Went under a log, and was coiled up looking out. It's likely climate change will result in rattlesnakes coming into the Tahoe Basin.

Maybe they are already here The Tahoe basin definitely has rattlesnakes. However, they are rather uncommon. The high-altitude living of Tahoe offers many benefits if you like to spend time outdoors. Perfect summer weather. Dry enough in the summer to prevent nearly all bugs from taking up residence. Nights that are cold enough to stop the few remaining pesky bugs in their flight paths. Hot sunshine on even the coldest winter days. A high proportion of sunny days. And glorious recreation including uncountable spectacular hiking trails.

But what about rattlesnakes on those trails? Some time back, we were hiking a couple of hundred miles north of - and feet lower than - Tahoe, when we came upon a rattler. We later identified it by his beautiful pattern as a Pacific Coast Rattlesnake. He lay coiled on the trail, his head up in the air, his tail up, too, but held a little lower. He wasn't shaking his rattle.

Though rattlesnakes are dangerous if provoked, they also provide humans with a tremendous service - they eat rodents, other reptiles, and insects and are in turn eaten by other predators.

Generally not aggressive, rattlesnakes strike when threatened or deliberately provoked, but given room they will retreat. Most snake bites occur when a rattlesnake is handled or accidentally touched by someone walking or climbing. The majority of snakebites occur on the hands, feet and ankles.

Rattlesnakes can cause serious injury to humans on rare occasions. The California Poison Control Center notes that rattlesnakes account for more than bites each year with one to two deaths.

Most bites occur between the months of April and October when snakes and humans are most active outdoors. About 25 percent of the bites are "dry," meaning no venom was injected, but the bites still require medical treatment. Two years ago in Nevada, a young boy was bitten in the hand by a rattlesnake, but the wound was small enough so that the snake's venom did not get into his bloodstream.

The potential of running into a rattlesnake should not deter anyone from venturing outdoors, but there are several precautions that can be taken to lessen the chance of being bitten when out in snake country - which is just about anywhere in Nevada and California. Depending on where you live if you have rattlesnakes on your property and want them gone i'll take them.

May 28, , PM I once wrestled rattler for four days, until I realized I was just masturbating. Middle fork of the American River I almost jumped on one, I stepped over one and never saw it, almost swam with one, almost grabbed onto one reaching around a rock, ran from at least a dozen when I heard them buzz me. I had just run across a 50 yard snow drift and took a break at the end of it.

As I was catching my breath I looked down and 12'' from my ankle was a big snake. Looked like a dark gopher snake. I reached down and as it slowly slithered away it buzzed me. I was surprised to see a rattler there. Had been going there for over 30 years and never once saw one and that was right by Camp Sacramento. I used to work there so I've spend a lot of time in that area. First one I ever saw there. ScottV Sea Lion. May 29, , PM So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

Ski Pro 3 -- Jerry Sea Lion. I see rattlers around my house and yard regularly and kill at least 6 a year for over the past 20 years. I figure any rattler stupid enough to get within my safety zone deserves the hoe!!

But, as far as rattlers in the mountains; I have worked over 25 years in the mountains around Loon, Ice House and Union Valley. My experience is; if you are outdoors in California there is a very high probability that a rattler can be in your general vicinity.

Luckily, never bitten. The foothills are littered with dens, your fishing spot must be very close to one. Rattlesnakes do not venture far from them. Tastes like chicken? And deep too. No, we buried it but she did publicize it on her FB as she does with all her kills and baby pictures Logged www.

I didn't know that rattlers were that small, must have just hatched.
