What is the difference between zanpakuto and bankai

A Zanpakuto or Soul Cutter takes the form of a katana. They're used both by Shinigami and Arrancar, Hollows that gained the power of a Shinigami by removing their masks almost completely.

Each Zanpakuto's spirit can be found in an inner world created by them in the mind and soul of the Shinigami. This serves as the point of meeting for both entities. Before the Zanpakuto is activated, it lies in a sealed state with no unique ability except Hollow Purification.

The Zanpakuto is activated into its first form, known as Shikai, once the wielder learns the name of the Zanpakuto by forcing themselves into a meditation state known as Jinzen. Zanpakuto's Bankai form is the final transformation and the highest form achieved in Bleach. On attaining the Bankai form, the Zanpakuto changes into a more evolved form.

The shape of the Zanpakuto is noticeably different than its previous form. The Zanpakuto also develops new abilities, which could be an elemental or illusionary power, poison ability, melee attack or a Kido abilit y. Sometimes, the Zanpakuto could instead develop an enhanced ability, which appears to be an improved ability of the Shikai form.

Soi Fong: Both shikai and bankai have reiatsu injection as a theme. I'm not certain if her shikai can be considered a poison type. It seems more like it causes something akin to a stroke by forcibly injecting reiatsu.

It's like how it's lethal for humans to inject air bubbles into their bloodstream. Tousen: Tousen has shown two shikai abilities. One has indeed the same theme as his bankai used against Ishida , but the other one is distinctly different where it's offense based used against Zaraki.

Tousen is IMO the only shinigami that has displayed a different ability in shikai than bankai. This may have something to do with the fact that the zanpakutou was not his own to begin with. Shikai shows aspects of the zanpakuto spirit while bankai causes the person to take the form of the the spirit of their sword giving them more of its power and keeping the ability similar. You should think of the abilities being related in this way instead of a simple static property as it explains Soifon's and other bankai's quite easily.

Ichigo- gains his spirit's cloak and sword Bakuya- becomes the cherry tree with leaves all around him. Renji- becomes the monkey part with the snake as his whip.

Each shikai is just an aspect of these final final forms meaning they won't be the exact same but the connection is there. Complete Sensory deprivation vs random ringing attack? Let's think of this from Juha Bach's perspective. If he saw Tousen's Shikai, and had to figure out what his Bankai could do, what would he say instead of "fire"?

That would be so far divorced from "sensory deprivation" I don't think he'd accept that. Only because people extrapolated from 2 hit kill. If you saw the Bankai without ever knowing the word "2 hit kill", you would never describe the Bankai as simply "1 hit kill". The problem is that it's not a true 1 hit kill anymore than Yamamoto's Bankai. Even if it is very powerful, it doesn't have the guaranteed death her shikai does.
